There has long since been the belief that you have to be in crisis to go to therapy. Or that something has to be exceptionally wrong for you to schedule an appointment. Only crazy people see a psychologist. I should be able to handle this on my own. Asking for help is a sign of weakness. Any of these sound familiar? They are all misconceptions of what therapy is and who it is for. Obviously, by the title of this post, the above statements are not true.

Many people certainly seek out therapy when they are in crisis mode, but oftentimes people seek out therapy for everyday concerns. This could be managing stress, whether personally or professionally. Navigating life changes related to changing jobs or schools or family structure. Some people are ready to explore their identity at a deeper level and may want help understanding themselves. Some people just want to talk to someone and have the focus on them rather than on anyone else in their life. Essentially, therapy is for everyone and can be sought out beyond those times of crisis.

The experience of having someone listen, encourage, accept and validate you is immensely healing. Furthermore, having a nonjudgemental space can aid in feeling cared about and appreciated just for who you are. Of course, you can seek out therapy when you feel like everything is on fire and falling apart. But, how about you just seek it out to have a space to talk and feel supported?

In the next blog post, find out why therapy is more than just talking.
