Difficulties in relationships often present as primary concerns in therapy, whether they are with a partner(s), family, or friends. Most often, communication is at the root of the trouble and it is important to have practical tips to learn better strategies to enhance all relationships.

1. Practice Active Listening
When someone is speaking, focus on understanding rather than preparing your response. Maintaining eye contact, asking clarifying questions, and reflecting back what you've heard can help your loved one feel valued and understood.
2. Communicate Openly and Honestly
Share your thoughts and feelings using "I" statements, such as, "I feel hurt when..."
instead of placing blame. This approach encourages productive conversations rather than defensiveness.
3. Manage Conflict Respectfully
Conflict is inevitable, but it doesn't have to damage your relationship. Try to stay calm, avoid personal attacks, and focus on solving the problem together rather than winning the argument. This may also mean learning to manage your emotions in healthy ways. So much hurt can come from angry words communicated during emotionally fraught times.

4. Take a Break
Sometimes we can get overwhelmed during a tense conversation. It is ok to ask for a moment (or more) to step away from the conversation and have time to breathe and think. This can be something discussed at a neutral time when each person can identify when and how this time-out can occur. Some people may need 5 minutes alone, while others may need to revisit the conversation on another day. Usually there is pressure to finish the conversation, but it will be more fruitful if each person is in the right headspace to engage.
5. Practice Empathy
This one can be hard for many people. Sometimes we don’t care about the other person’s feelings or perspectives, because we are more focused on them understanding ours. Try to see situations from the other person's perspective. Even when you disagree, acknowledging their feelings can reduce tension and build trust.
When It May Be Time to Seek Professional Support
Sometimes relationship challenges persist despite your best efforts. Therapy can provide a supportive, nonjudgmental space to improve communication, rebuild trust, develop healthier coping strategies, and better understand relationship patterns.
